I hear you on the 90s Christian hard rock scene. I got invited to a music festival back then called Sonshine in Willmar, MN. I didn't want to go. Thought it'd be lame. Then I got my toenail ripped off in a mosh pit (yeah, I hadn't even bothered to wear covered toes) and it was game on. Those bands were definitely harder live. Way harder.
Have you listened to Sturgill Simpson or Fantastic Negrito? I also love Sometimes Y (though my favorites are Make Me a Believer and Radio), and I think SS and FN are some of the most interesting artists blending genres today. You could dump their whole catalogs into a playlist with Sometimes Y and it would flow seamlessly with blues, rock, country, roots, and R&B all mixed together with great songwriting.
